What We Do
Our vision is the large-scale and widespread adoption of sustainable solid biomass fuels and clean burning technologies for people who depend on wood, charcoal, and other traditional biomass fuels for their daily cooking and heating needs.
How We Work
We nurture
We invest financial, technical, and business management resources in social enterprises that have the potential to grow and multiply.
We look for early stage social enterprises that have the right combination of management, product development, market potential, and ambition.
We lead
Better charcoal and alternative solid biomass fuels still play a small part in the renewable energy equation, but we believe these fuels play an important part in displacing unsustainable wood charcoal in the energy mix.
The Charcoal Project helps move the discussion forward by actively engaging with policy-makers, government agencies, businesses and academics in the sector. We provide resources to engage a community of practice so that voices at all levels can be heard in the discussion.
We share
Charcoal is a U$12 billion-a-year industry in sub-Saharan Africa, which is why we want to share the knowledge and engage everyone who can help make a difference.
The Charcoal Project online provides a home and resources to the global community of stakeholders who are working to bring better fuels and technologies for those who need it most.
Our Impact
Replacing wood and traditional wood charcoal with more sustainable solutions will have a positive impact on forest cover, energy savings and human health, while also contributing to income generation and local employment.
