About Harvest Fuel Initiative

harvest fuel

The Harvest Fuel Initiative (HFI) is a joint collaboration between The Charcoal Project and MIT D-Lab to help scale small and medium sized charcoal briquette producers in East Africa.  HFI’s objectives are as follows:

  • Increase business and technical skills of participating enterprises to achieve scale in production and distribution.
  • Increase energy access for low- and middle-income consumers.
  • Increase opportunities for income generation throughout the supply chain, from feedstock suppliers to retailers.
  • Increase participation by women in briquette enterprises as owner/operators and employees.
  • Establish a community of practice for briquette enterprises to leverage their collective knowledge.
  • Positively impact the environment by displacing use of unsustainable wood charcoal.

HFI Kenya

In 2020, the HFI program will focus on a cohort in Kenya of 20 small and medium sized enterprises. Support for this program has been provided by the Mennonite Development Association’s (MEDA) Equitable Prosperity Through Private Sector Development or Maendeleo Sawa (M-SAWA) Project funded by Global Affairs Canada.

M-SAWA aims to contribute to Kenya’s economic growth and increase job creation by improving the business, environmental and gender performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small entrepreneurs (SEs) in targeted counties and sectors.  More information on the businesses participating in the program can be found in Meet the Entrepreneurs.
