Kencoco Ltd.
Mission and Operation
Kencoco Ltd. produces environmentally friendly fuel in the Coastal area of Kenya. Headquartered in Mombasa with production facilities in Kikambala, Kencoco takes advantage of the abundant supply of coconut waste (coconut shells & husks) in the region to make clean burning charcoal briquettes for cooking and heating.
Kencoco briquettes, sold under the name Eco-makaa Briquettes, serve as a low cost alternative to environmentally damaging fuels such as firewood, kerosene and traditionally produced wood charcoal. Kencoco’s briquettes have high heat content and are long burning, so they are more efficient than wood or traditional charcoal. They are also cleaner burning and smokeless, providing health benefits to consumers, whether it be household users or institutional users like hotels. By creating an affordable and reliable source of clean energy, Kencoco Ltd. positively impacts the health of the community, contributes to waste management in the region and reduces deforestation related to traditional wood fuels.
During 2020 and 2021, Kencoco Ltd. plans to increase the scale of their operations from 40 ton/month to 100 tons/month. This will be done by expanding the company’s processing of coconut waste with new carbonization kilns in the three major coconut producing areas in the region. The company also plans to acquire a larger extruder for producing briquettes, and a larger truck for distribution and feedstock procurement. Through HFI Kenya, the company plans to improve on its production efficiency and adopt effective marketing and distribution strategies that will ensure they become a leading provider of clean cooking fuel.
