Rattat Bioenergy LTD
Mission and Operation
Rattat Bioenergy LTD is located in Rongo Town in Migori County, Kenya. Rattat Bioenergy supplies customers with renewable fuel sources by collecting charcoal dust and residue from charcoal vendors, and converting it to fuel. Rattat makes charcoal briquettes from these materials, and sells its products to households, small restaurants, poultry farmers and bakers.
To produce their briquettes, they bind the charcoal residue with natural resin and molasses, then put the mixture through a briquette extruder machine. The briquettes are then sun-dried and packaged for sale. This process yields 1-2 tons of briquettes per day, and employs eight people. Because the company’s briquettes are low cost, weighty relative to convention charcoal and long burning, they bring energy savings to their customers and are often used to cook traditional dishes like beans or ugali. Rattat delivers its products directly to customers and hopes to establish retail outlets in Homa Bay, Kisii, Awendo, Kisumu City and Migori towns in the very near future.
Using chardust as feedstock enables Rattat Bioenergy to clean up a waste stream from traditional wood charcoal, which is generally unsustainably produced. By replacing traditional wood charcoal with charcoal briquettes made from waste, Rattat Bioenergy is having a positive impact on deforestation and climate change. So the company is producing positive environmental impacts even as it generates employment and supports livelihoods in its community, so that value is added throughout the supply chain of this clean energy product.
