The Charcoal Project (TCP) is pleased to announce its participation in organizing the first International Conference on Charcoal.
The conference will take place in Africa in 2012.
To lay the groundwork for the conference, TCP and its partner, CIGA (Centro de Investigaciones en Geografía Ambiental, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), are preparing a Symposium & Workshop to be held in Arusha, Tanzania, between June 12 – 16.
Titled “The role of charcoal in health, local environments, climate change, and poverty alleviating initiatives,” the June event will bring together some of the world’s leading experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities inherent in the largely unsustainable production and consumption of charcoal worldwide.
The Symposium & Workshop will be held as a one-day event in the context of the Joint 2011 Meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) & the Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB Africa) (12 -16 June).
The 2012 International Conference on Charcoal aims to identify a handful of plausible solutions, best-options for public policy, appropriate technologies, the potential for carbon finance, and sustainable forest management.

I am involved in production and development of a project to produce charcoal briquettes from waste on large scale and construction of biogas plants in Uganda . This is a wonderful initiative, there is no doubt it will accomplish the cause!
Thank you for your kind words, Sir! And please keep us posted on your progress in Uganda!
Hi, thank you so much for this incredible website, it has been very valuable in connection to a business idea competition I’m attending at the moment! Is there a summary of the 2011 Symposium or from the 2012 International Conference? I’m especially interested in appropriate technologies for producing briquettes using agricultural waste.
Best regards,
Nathaniel
Dear Nathaniel,
As far as I know there is presently no compendium of appropriate technologies for the production of solid biomass fuel briquettes from ag waste. However, The Charcoal Project will very soon be announcing an exciting new partnership with a major technical university in the US to spearhead an initiative for the development and dissemination of the technology and viable business models. So, stay tuned!
Regards,
Kim
