Dr. Tuyeni H. Mwampamba, Director
Dr. Tuyeni H. Mwampamba – A native of Tanzania and trained as an ecologist at the University of California Davis, Dr. Tuyeni H Mwampamba is a research professor at the Institute of Ecosystems and Sustainability Research – IIES UNAM in Morelia, Mexico. Since 2002, she has been interested in the social and ecological dimensions of charcoal production with the aim of understanding how sustainability is conceptualized and operationalized by actors along the value chain. Tuyeni is unapologetically pro-charcoal, believing that – since charcoal is here to stay for the foreseeable future in the Global South – efforts should be focused on how to make it a just and sustainable woodfuel. She works with producers, governments and NGOs in Mexico and Tanzania to identify conducive conditions for charcoal value chains that work for people and nature.
