WEBINAR: Institutional Cookstoves

We’re always happy to share events we think are of interest to our community. This one comes to us courtesy of the good people at Winrock and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The webinar is free and is being presented by some good guys in the clean cookstove world.

Are you interested in further reducing fuel consumption by providing fuel-efficient stove solutions that accommodate cooking for large groups? Would you like to broaden your consumer base by introducing institutional stoves in local restaurants, universities, schools, prisons, orphanages, hospitals or refugee camps? Have you heard about institutional stoves, but aren’t sure how best to design, manufacture or promote an efficient institutional stove that meets the needs of your community?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, please register today for the upcoming EPA and Winrock webinar on Institutional Stoves taking place on Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Join the webinar to:

  • Learn about institutional stove design and manufacturing.
  • Listen to examples and lessons learned from current programs being implemented in the field.
  • Interact with experienced speakers through instant polling and Q&A.

Webinar participation is free. For the web portion, a high-speed internet connection is required. A dedicated phone line is required to listen to audio (the Web portion does not include audio capacity). Additional log-in and call-in information will be provided upon registration.

The majority of improved cooking technologies currently promoted are designed and intended for domestic cooking, used by individual households. However, tremendous fuel savings and emissions reductions can also be achieved in universities, schools, prisons, orphanages, hospitals, refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) camps and other institutional settings responsible for feeding larger groups. Institutional stoves are larger and usually sturdier than household improved cookstoves, but often incorporate the same design principles. Xavier Brandao from Prakti Design, Peter Scott from BURN Design Lab and BURN Manufacturing Co. and Fred Colgan from Institutional Stove Solutions (InStove) will each present on their experience and lessons learned with institutional stoves covering topics such as design principles, manufacturing techniques and dissemination tools.

Date: Thursday, March 7, 2013
Time: 16:00 – 17:30 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)/Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST).

About the speakers:

Xavier Brandao is the Africa General Manager for Prakti Design. Prior to joining Prakti, Xavier co-founded and managed a small stove manufacturing and distribution company in Benin. He has been involved in sustainable energy business development in Africa since 2008.

Peter Scott is the Executive Director of BURN Design Lab and the CEO of BURN Manufacturing Co. Peter created BURN Design Lab and BURN Manufacturing Co. to design and manufacture high quality clean burning cookstoves. BURN is currently developing a factory in East Africa that will produce 3 million stoves in the next 10 years. Peter Scott’s work has been featured in CNN, Entrepreneur, the New Yorker and he was recently chosen as one of Foreign Policy Magazine’s 100 Top Global thinkers of 2010. In 2006, his work was honored with an Ashden Award for supporting local producers in Southern Africa to create highly profitable institutional stove businesses. In Malawi, these producers have sold over 2 million dollars in institutional stoves in the last six years.

Fred Colgan co-founded Institutional Stove Solutions (InStove) with Damon Ogle, a stove engineer formerly with Aprovecho Research Center (ARC). Fred and his wife, Lise, also own “Colgan’s Island” – the campus of ARC and InStove. Drawing on Fred’s organizing skills and Damon’s engineering, the project has grown over the last five years into a global enterprise, with institutional stoves now in 18 countries, and a production factory starting in Nigeria in the next two months.
